Fixing Concrete Before It Has to Be Replaced
Concrete repair can save a driveway, patio or walk that is cracked, sunken or worn but still has years left in it. With a median home age near 50 years in Macon, a lot of local concrete is in that middle stage. Our job is to figure out why it is failing, tell you plainly whether a repair will last, and then do the repair that fits: crack sealing, leveling, resurfacing, or replacing only the bad sections.
Repair or replace?
HomeGuide's resurfacing guide offers a good rule of thumb. Surface flaking and cracks narrower than about a quarter inch can usually be repaired or resurfaced. Large cracks, crumbling, spalling, or damage that would need a new layer more than about 2 inches thick mean replacement. Cracks wider than a quarter inch can also point to a problem under the slab that needs to be found first.
We look at more than the surface:
- The base. If the ground under the slab has washed out or settled, a surface repair will not hold.
- Drainage. Downspouts and runoff aimed at a slab cause many Macon problems. We fix the water first.
- Roots. A crack that keeps growing next to a big tree usually means roots are still pushing.
- The rest of the slab. If most of it is sound, repair. If most of it is failing, replace.
Repair methods
Crack routing and sealing. Cracks are cleaned out, widened slightly and filled with a flexible sealant so water stays out. This matters in Macon even though winters are mild: the city averages about 41 freezing nights a year, and water in a crack that freezes pushes it wider.
Slab leveling. A sunken panel can often be lifted back into place by pumping material under it through small holes. Mudjacking uses a cement slurry; polyjacking uses expanding foam. Both fill the void that let the slab drop.
Resurfacing. A thin cement-based overlay goes over sound concrete that has a worn, flaking or stained surface. It gives a fresh, uniform top and can be colored or textured.
Section replacement. When a few panels are broken beyond repair, we saw-cut at the joints, remove only those sections, rebuild the base, and pour new concrete to match the grade.
Step and edge repair. Chipped step noses and crumbled driveway edges are rebuilt with patching mortar or reformed and repoured.
After the repair
No repair hides completely. Patches and new sections will look a little different in color at first. Sealing the whole surface afterward helps blend it and protects the repair. Keep downspouts away, fill new cracks early, and call us if a leveled slab starts to move again.

Concrete Repair Questions
Can a cracked driveway be repaired?
Often, yes, if the cracks are narrow and the base is sound. HomeGuide notes that cracks over about a quarter inch, crumbling or spalling usually mean replacement. We check and tell you which applies.
How long does resurfacing last?
HomeGuide puts resurfaced concrete at about 8 to 15 years before it needs more work, depending on traffic, weather and the slab underneath.
Mudjacking or polyjacking?
Both lift sunken slabs. Mudjacking uses a cement slurry and costs less; polyjacking uses lightweight foam, needs smaller holes and costs more. We recommend one based on the slab and the soil.
Will the repair match my old concrete?
Patches and new sections rarely match exactly at first. Sealing or resurfacing the whole area helps blend them.
Why does my concrete keep cracking?
Common causes are a weak or washed-out base, water from downspouts, tree roots and missing control joints. Fixing the cause matters as much as fixing the crack.
