Concrete in an Old Railroad Town
Gordon was founded in 1843 as a depot on the Central of Georgia Railway, and it was named for William Washington Gordon, a railroad official. For concrete contractors, Gordon is mostly a town of established homes, where the work centers on replacing worn driveways, fixing walks and adding patios and slabs.
The housing picture
Gordon is a small city in Wilkinson County. It counted 2,017 people in 2010 and 1,783 in 2020, and covers about 5.45 square miles. The 2020 census found 872 housing units, with 15.8 percent vacant. In a town without much new construction, most concrete has been in place a long time.
Older concrete in a town like this shows predictable wear:
- Driveways poured thin decades ago, now breaking up under heavier modern vehicles
- Front walks lifted by tree roots
- Porch steps that have settled and separated from the house
- Patios with wide cracks where water has worked under the slab
Repair, resurface or replace
We give you a straight answer on which fix makes sense.
Repair is for narrow, stable cracks and small broken edges. We clean the crack, fill it with a flexible sealant or patch, and seal the surface.
Resurfacing is for a slab that is solid and level but worn, pitted or stained. A thin cement overlay gives it a fresh top.
Replacement is for slabs that have sunk, tilted, broken into pieces or were poured too thin. We remove the old concrete, rebuild the base and pour new.
Storm damage
On April 3, 2017, an EF2 tornado struck Gordon and caused property damage. Storms like that bring down trees and limbs that crack driveways and walks, and cleanup equipment can break slab edges. If you are dealing with storm damage, we can inspect the concrete and tell you what needs replacing.
Flat ground near the coastal plain
Gordon sits at about 348 feet, lower and flatter than the hill towns north of Macon. On flat lots, water has fewer places to go. We build slopes into every slab so water runs off, and we watch where downspouts empty so they do not dump water onto new concrete or under its edges.
New work too
Not everything is repair. Owners in Gordon also ask for new back patios, stamped concrete entries, walkways to sheds and workshops, and slabs for carports and storage buildings. For new work, we start with the same basics: a firm, compacted base, the right thickness for the use, reinforcement, control joints and proper curing.
Why old slabs were thinner
Many older driveways in small Georgia towns were poured for lighter cars, sometimes on little more than packed dirt. Today's pickups and SUVs are much heavier, and a thin slab with no real base cracks under that weight. When we replace a driveway in Gordon, we dig out enough to put down a proper compacted stone base and pour a slab thick enough for modern vehicles. We add reinforcement and cut control joints so the cracks that do form stay tight and straight.
Steps, stoops and porches
Gordon's older homes often have short concrete steps leading up to a porch or stoop, and after decades those steps tend to settle away from the house or crack across a tread. Rebuilding them is one of the more common small jobs in a town like this. We remove the old steps, compact a new base, and form fresh steps with even risers and treads pitched slightly forward so rain runs off. If you want a handrail, the posts can be set into the new concrete during the pour.

My old Gordon driveway is crumbling. Can it be resurfaced?
Only if the slab is still solid and level. If it is breaking apart or was poured too thin, replacement is the lasting fix.
Can you fix steps that pulled away from the porch?
Yes. We usually remove settled steps and pour new ones on a proper base, tied to the porch where appropriate.
Do you take small repair jobs in Gordon?
Yes. Call and describe the job. Photos help us plan the visit.
