Concrete on Higher Ground

Forsyth sits higher than most towns around Macon. Its elevation is about 719 feet, and the city sits on top of a ridge. For concrete contractors, Forsyth jobs start with one question: which way does the water go? Get that wrong and even a well-poured driveway will fight erosion for its whole life.

Working with the ridge

Forsyth drains in two directions. One side of the ridge sends water southwest toward tributaries of Tobesofkee Creek. The other sends it northeast toward tributaries of Rum Creek. Both creeks eventually reach the Ocmulgee River. On a ridge, many lots slope toward the street, away from it, or off to one side, and some do all three.

On a sloped driveway, we pay attention to:

  • Base: a well-compacted stone base, thicker where water will run under the edges
  • Thickness and reinforcement: extra support on steep sections and where vehicles turn
  • Surface texture: a deeper broom finish on slopes so tires and shoes grip in the rain
  • Edges: keeping runoff from undercutting the sides of the slab and washing out the soil
  • Transitions: smooth changes in grade at the garage and street so cars do not scrape

Walkways and steps

Sloped yards often mean steps. A front walk that rises from the street to the porch may need a few concrete steps along the way, with consistent rise and run so nobody trips. We form steps and landings as part of the walkway pour when we can, which avoids cold joints in the middle of the path. On gentler slopes, a walkway with a steady grade can do the job without any steps at all.

Patios that stay put

Backyard patios on sloped ground often need a retaining edge or a thicker turned-down edge on the low side. Without it, soil can slowly erode from under the slab and it starts to crack. We look at the yard as a whole: where the gutters empty, where water collects after rain and how the patio will change that. Then we set the slab so water runs off it and keeps moving.

Older homes near the square

Forsyth was established in 1823, the same year the Monroe County seat moved there from Johnstonville. The Forsyth Commercial Historic District, with the Monroe County Courthouse, Courthouse Square and several 19th-century buildings, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Older homes around the center of town often have old concrete walks, steps and driveways that have cracked or settled over the decades. We can repair what is sound, replace what is not, and keep the look in line with an older house by choosing simple finishes and the right joint pattern.

Interstate access

Interstate 75 runs through the eastern part of Forsyth, with exits 185 through 188, and downtown Macon is 23 miles southeast. That makes Forsyth an easy trip for us and for concrete deliveries. If your property is out toward Rum Creek or on a long rural road, tell us about access when you call so we can plan for the truck.

Which service fits

Most Forsyth projects are driveways and walkways that need to handle grade, plus patios, shop slabs and repairs. If you are not sure whether to repair or replace, we will tell you what we see and why. Call (478) 666-0956 to set up a visit.

Forsyth Questions

My Forsyth driveway is steep. Will concrete be slippery?

A heavier broom finish gives good grip. We can also add texture or score lines on steep sections. Avoid a smooth or glossy finish on slopes.

Why is the soil washing out from under my patio?

Usually water is running along or under the edge. Fixing it often means redirecting runoff and adding a thicker edge or a retaining border before the slab is repaired or replaced.

Do you work outside the Forsyth city limits?

Yes, we work throughout the Forsyth area in Monroe County. Let us know about long driveways or tight access when you call.
