River Country Concrete

Juliette is a small community on the west bank of the Ocmulgee River in northeast Monroe County, about 23 miles from Macon along U.S. Route 23. Concrete contractors working in Juliette deal with country lots, river-bottom ground and older homes, plus visitors who come to see the town's main street. Each of those affects how we plan a pour, from the base we build to the day we schedule the truck.

A movie town

Juliette was named for Juliette McCracken, the daughter of a railroad engineer, and formed from the merger of two places called Brownsville and Iceberg. The movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed here. After filming, the main street sets were turned into a tourist district, complete with a working Whistle Stop Cafe. The community was first listed as a census-designated place in 2020, with 290 residents in about 1.9 square miles.

Ground near the river

The Ocmulgee River forms the line between Monroe and Jones counties right at Juliette, and the community sits at about 380 feet. Land near a river tends to have softer, wetter soil in low areas. That is the most important factor for concrete here.

On lower ground, we take extra steps: 1. Dig out soft or organic soil until we reach firm ground 2. Bring in crushed stone and compact it in layers 3. Grade the site so surface water moves away from the slab 4. Use reinforcement suited to the load and soil 5. Keep the top of the slab high enough that standing water does not sit on it

On higher ground away from the river, the soil is usually firmer and the job is more routine.

A big employer nearby

Juliette is also home to Plant Scherer, described as one of the nation's largest power generation facilities. If your driveway meets a road used by work trucks, the apron where the drive meets the road takes the most weight, so we pour that section thicker and with more reinforcement than the rest of the drive.

Around Juliette

Round Oak Juliette Road crosses the Ocmulgee right at Juliette, and Jarrell Plantation, a historic site with a museum and park, is less than 10 miles away. Across the river is Jones County. The area is rural and wooded, with homes spread along county roads rather than on subdivision streets, so most jobs here are driveways and aprons, porch steps and walks, and slabs for sheds, shops and carports, plus repairs to older concrete that has sunk or cracked.

Small-town logistics

Juliette is small and off the main interstate. U.S. Route 23 runs along its west side, about 17 miles to Jackson. We plan concrete delivery times carefully for jobs here, because a delayed truck on a hot day can mean concrete that starts setting before it is placed. For larger pours, we may split the job into sections over more than one day.

Main street and visitor traffic

The tourist district around the old movie sets draws visitors, and on busy days the streets near it fill up. For homes and businesses near the main street, we schedule pours on quieter days when we can, and we keep the work zone tidy and safe. Fresh concrete near a sidewalk or parking area needs barriers so nobody steps into it while it sets. We set those up and take them down when the slab is ready for foot traffic.

Juliette Questions

My Juliette lot is near the river. Can I still pour concrete?

Yes, with good base prep. We dig out soft soil, build up a compacted stone base and grade the site so water moves away from the slab.

Why is the end of my driveway breaking up?

The apron at the road takes the most weight, especially where trucks pass. We replace it thicker and with more reinforcement.

Can you match concrete to an older home's style?

Yes. Simple broom finishes, traditional joint patterns or stamped brick and stone looks all suit older homes.
