Small Lots, Old Homes, Practical Concrete
Pleasant Hill is a historic Macon neighborhood where many houses were built between 1870 and 1936. For concrete contractors, that means old foundations, narrow lots and concrete that has been patched, buried and repoured over many decades. Most of the work here is practical: safe front walks, sound steps, a usable driveway and a small patio.
Neighborhood history
Pleasant Hill has long been an African American community and was home to prominent members of that community. Beda-Etta College operated there from 1921 to 1955. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and overlaps part of the Macon Historic District. It is roughly bounded by Madison Street, Vineville Avenue, Rogers Avenue and Neal Avenue. Interstate 75 cuts through the area.
The houses are a mix of Queen Anne, Neoclassical and Craftsman cottages, along with shotgun houses. Many sit on narrow lots close to the street.
Front walks and steps
On older cottages and shotgun houses, the front steps and walk are usually the first concrete people want fixed. Over a century, steps settle, crack and pull away from the porch. Walks heave and break. A trip hazard at the front door is a real problem, especially for older residents.
We rebuild steps with an even rise and run on a compacted base, so they stay put. Where a walk meets the public sidewalk, we tie in cleanly and keep the surfaces flush. Handrails can be set into new steps if needed.
Driveways on narrow lots
Many lots here were laid out before cars were common. Driveways, where they exist, are often narrow strips along the side of the house. When we replace or add one, we check the property line, keep runoff off the neighbor's side and make sure the slope carries water toward the street. A ribbon driveway with two concrete strips and grass between them can fit tight spaces and keep a traditional look.
Working around old foundations
Many older homes sit on brick piers or low foundations, not modern slabs. When we pour next to them, we set new concrete so it never directs water under the house. We keep the slab surface below the sill and slope it away from the foundation. If a new patio goes against the back of an older house, an isolation joint lets the two move independently.
Simple patios
Small backyards suit small patios. A plain broom-finish slab gives room for chairs and a grill. A stamped border or brick pattern adds a touch of style without much extra cost. Either one makes the yard easier to use after rain.
Repairs that last
For cracked or sunken concrete, we find the cause first. Common culprits in older neighborhoods are tree roots, downspouts emptying at the edge of a walk, and old slabs poured on dirt with no base. Then we repair, resurface or replace based on what will hold up.
Small jobs matter here
In an older neighborhood, the most useful concrete work is often small: one set of steps, a 20-foot walk, a pad for trash cans, a ramp for a family member who uses a walker. We take those jobs. A short ramp with a gentle slope and a broom finish can make a front door usable again, and replacing one heaved section of walk can remove a trip hazard that has been there for years.

Pleasant Hill Questions
Can you rebuild old front steps on a Pleasant Hill cottage?
Yes. We remove the settled steps and pour new ones on a compacted base with even rise and run. Handrail posts can be set in at the same time.
Is there room for a driveway on a narrow lot?
Often, yes. A narrow strip or a two-track ribbon driveway can fit beside many older houses. We check property lines and drainage first.
Will a new patio cause water problems under my old house?
Not if it is set below the sill and sloped away from the foundation. We plan the grade so water moves away from the house.
