Where the Hills Turn Flat

Roberta sits roughly on the fall line, where the hillier Piedmont to the north gives way to the flatter coastal plain to the south. For concrete contractors working in Roberta and the country around it, that means both kinds of ground show up within a short drive, and each needs a different plan.

How Roberta began

In 1888 the A&F Railroad was built about a mile from Knoxville, and a new town called New Knoxville grew up around its station. It was later named Roberta, after the young daughter of Hiram David McCrary. The city was incorporated in 1910. The original depot burned in 1949, passenger service later ended, and Interstate 75 was built to the east, bypassing the town.

Today Roberta is a small city near the center of Crawford County, at about 505 feet. It covers about 1.5 square miles and counted 813 residents in 2020. U.S. Route 80 runs through town, 26 miles east to Macon and 69 miles west to Columbus, and U.S. Route 341 crosses it, leading 27 miles southeast to Perry.

Two kinds of ground

North of the fall line, ground is more rolling, and slopes are the main concern. South of it, land is flatter, and slow drainage is the issue. For a driveway or patio, we adjust:

On slopes: more attention to edges, runoff paths and grip. We thicken edges where soil could wash out and use a heavier broom finish.

On flat ground: a deliberate slope built into the slab so water does not sit on it, and care with downspouts and low spots.

Rural properties

Outside town, properties with long drives, barns and equipment call for working concrete. Typical projects:

  • Concrete aprons where gravel drives meet the road
  • Shop and barn floors that can handle tractors and trailers
  • Wash pads that slope to a drain or the edge
  • Slabs for pole buildings and carports
  • Walkways from parking to the house

In town

In Roberta itself, homes are closer together and older. Front walks, steps and driveways that have cracked and settled over the years are the most common jobs. We repair what is sound and replace what is not, and we keep new work simple and in scale with older homes.

Planning the pour

Roberta is 26 miles from Macon by U.S. 80, so we time deliveries carefully. On hot days, concrete can start to stiffen in the truck if it waits too long. We schedule early starts, have the forms and base ready before the truck arrives, and split larger jobs into sections if needed.

Room to grow

When Roberta was incorporated in 1910, its limits were expanded by 1,200 yards in every direction, and much of the ground inside and around those limits is still open. Properties here often have space for a detached garage, a shop or a pole barn. If you are planning one, tell us the building size and the door locations, and we will form the slab to the footprint, thicken the edges where walls or posts will sit, and set anchors where the builder needs them.

Stamped and decorative options

Not every country job has to be plain. Stamped concrete with a stone or brick pattern works well for front porches, patios and walkways on farmhouses and older homes around Roberta. A colored border along a plain broom-finished drive is another way to add some style. Decorative concrete does need a sealer reapplied every few years to keep the color looking fresh.

Roberta Questions

Do you work on farms and rural properties around Roberta?

Yes. We pour barn and shop floors, wash pads, aprons and slabs for pole buildings, sized for the equipment that will use them.

My lot is flat and water sits on my patio. Can that be fixed?

A new patio can be poured with a slight built-in slope. For an existing one, we look at whether resurfacing or replacement can correct the drainage.

Can you pour an apron where my gravel drive meets the road?

Yes. A concrete apron keeps gravel from washing into the road and stands up to the turning traffic at the entrance.
